The name Andrew Lloyd Webber is synonymous with musicals. Some of his famous works we’ve watched are The Phantom of the Opera (my very first musical!), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita and Cats. We were ecstatic to watch one of his longest-running musicals which has been watched by over 25 million people worldwide last night – STARLIGHT EXPRESS! Starlight Express is so popular around the world that there are theaters purposefully built to stage it. This was Dana’s third time watching a musical live at the Marina Bay Sands Grand Theatre (after Lion King and Annie) but her very first composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the very first time Starlight Express is being performed in Singapore so it was a significant milestone for our family!

Starlight Express – a tale of trains, love and race of a lifetime!

Her 1st Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical at 5 years old!

The storyline is timeless and simple. Inspired by W. Awdry’s children’s book series ‘Thomas the Tank Engine‘, Starlight Express is a heart-warming tale of how ‘Rusty’, a steam train, beats slicker, newer models (such as the diesel and the electric trains) in a big prestigious race. Weaving his magic into the musical, Andrew Lloyd Webber transformed a story about trains racing against each other into an uplifting tale about how an underdog made good by overcoming the odds to prove his worth and win the love of his life.

The colourful trains and wagons are played by a cast of highly talented roller-skating actors whose vocal prowess and skating stunts leave the audience spellbound. The musical incorporated audience participation by interspersing song numbers with special 3-D effects on a giant drop down screen where we were told to ‘put on our safety goggles’ (handed out as we entered the theater). The kids were very eager to wear their 3D glasses to enjoy the visual illusion of these 3D exhilarating race segments.

Overall, we found the Starlight Express a very entertaining and enjoyable musical. Kids were able to identify the ‘bad’ guys (the arrogant trains) and were rooting for ‘Rusty’ (the underdog) all the way. There were touches of comedy and spectacular light effects. The genres of music were diverse (ranging from R&B to hip hop and blues) and the dance choreography was power-packed with speed, energy and daredevil stunts. By the second half, the audience was clapping, swaying and having a rocking, rolling good time! I personally loved the finale where they did a reprise of all the song numbers to end the show on a high note.
