When it comes to kitchen gadgets, you’ve probably already have one too many as it is, but the new Philips Avance Airfryer XL is definitely a worthwhile addition.

The unit consists of a large egg-shaped device that has a pull out basket tray for your food. The basket dismantles fully and is dishwasher friendly. The new Philips Avance Airfryer XL is bigger than its predecessor with 50% bigger capacity and cooks food by reducing up to 80% of the fat! Ever since we welcome home the Philips Avance Airfryer XL, it is now a permanent fixture on my kitchen counter.

The big bonus of the Philips Avance Airfryer XL is its ‘Plug-and-Play’ user-friendliness. I was able to navigate the appliance without looking at the manual. Simply plug the cord into an electric socket, pull out the basket tray, pop in your food, set the temperature and time (there’s a handy guide printed on the fryer itself for your reference), and that’s it!

How does Philips Airfryer work?

There is a heating element in the Philips Airfryer (similar to that in an electric oven) and a big fan (hidden from sight) that blows air onto the heating element and therefore the food below. Turn on the Airfryer to your chosen temperature (up to 200 degrees), set the timer (up to 30 minutes) and you’re cooking right away with ZERO oil.

I love deep fried food but am put off by the hassle of the traditional deep-frying process. The splattering from the hot oil is a kitchen hazard and the cleaning up afterwards is always a messy affair. Yes we can use a deep fryer to do the deep frying, but we waste a copious amount of oil. The disposal of the hot oil is yet another troublesome process altogether (we should not reuse the oil as it may turn carcinogenic). Most importantly, consumption of too much foods fried in hot oil may cause the onset of a whole slew of health problems.

Then, history was made in 2011 when Philips launched the revolutionary Viva Airfryer where consumers were told we do not need to use any oil to deep-fry the best tasting food. Really? How is that possible? Well, that’s because the Philips Airfryer uses the oil inside the food itself to fry the food on the outside.

The Airfryer’s patented Rapid Air Technology combines fast-circulating hot air with a grill to cook with up to 80% less fat, yet which still have superior taste. This new technology not only reduces the cooking time (as compared to a convection oven), it also produces crispier results because of the way the heat is forced into the cooking chamber. Due to its popularity, the Philips Avance Airfryer XL has been developed in direct response to consumer’s feedback for greater capacity, versatility and performance.

So what can we cook with the Airfryer?

Contrary to popular belief, the Philips Airfryer is not designed to merely fry frozen food. It comes with a really useful recipe booklet for you to cook other amazing dishes too. You can also bake, grill, gratinate and roast with the Airfryer too! If you need even more ideas, you can join the ‘I Love Airfryer’ Facebook Group started by Ms. Dable Kwan (From Hong Kong) with almost 12,000 members all sharing mouth-watering dishes cook entirely with the Philips Airfryer. What I discovered very quickly was that not only does the Airfryer not use any oil, it extracts excess oil from the food during cooking while retaining the juicy, moist texture. Incredible!
