The spirit is willing…but…

It’s strange… to have these thoughts cross my mind last Sunday in church. The very words cautioned in the Bible crept into my mind as I contemplate what had initially sounded like a fun night out, turning it into one that I may just drag my feet through. You see, I was glad to serve as a church musician…it’s my way of giving back to God, a token of my gratitude. However, I’m beginning to feel the strains of the day which started early since 7am…so much so that the prospect of fulfilling a promise to bring my ladies out for the iLight Marina Festival is looking very much like a chore rather than another opportunity to create memories – well…not the right occasion if the mood is not going to be right.

All of us have external commitments in addition to work. Some are obligatory, be it running errands, paying bills, chauffeur duties, service to an organization, family visitations, networking with friends etc….and most, if not all, spring from good intentions. However occasionally, we let these commitments consume us and we return home to our families, tired…overwhelmed…and sadly, missing the chance to connect and serve the needs of the very people we live for.

I read somewhere that when something is important enough, you don’t make excuses, you make it happen. Determined to keep my promise and turn the remaining half of my Sunday into a memorable one for the wife and daughter (who have supported my ministry faithfully and waited patiently for my return), I headed home right after church, downed a cup of coffee and took a short power nap. At this point, I must say, 15 years of marriage (and putting up with my idiosyncrasies) have enabled my wife to see that her husband was badly in need of a short rest to recharge. And rest she did give me while she continued to engage the daughter, on a Sunday afternoon.

She whipped up a simple home-cooked meal (yes…the amazing wife!). Later, around 7pm as the sun was setting, we set off to the promised destination – the iLight Marina Bay Festival. Walking from Marina Bay Sands, we were awed – life sized installations set against the black canvas of the night, glistening and vying for attention and glory. Each exhibit had a life of its own and the ingenuity of the festival lifted my fatigue. The pièce de résistance of the festival is none other than ‘Celebration of Life‘ – the larger than life pop art projection onto the facade of Art Science Museuem.

We spent a leisurely evening strolling by the waterfront among many other families who had come out in full force after the refreshing downpour, all to catch a glimpse of these light installations of the iLight Marina Bay Festival. For the daughter, zipping around the scenic Marina Bayfront on her trusty Radio-flyer scooter checking out the art pieces was a fun exercise. The wife was inspired by the sustainable art installations. For me, I was happy to indulge in a bit of art myself – photography.

The iLight Marina Bay 2014 illuminates more than just the night sky…If the spirit is willing, the flesh is definitely capable…with some resolve and determination (and an understanding spouse), making memories with the family need not come second place to our obligations (legitimate or otherwise).

If you’ve not visited the iLight Marina Bay 2014, do it soon before it ends on 30 March 2014. It’s Asia’s first and only sustainable light art festival which features 28 innovative and environmentally friendly light art installations from around the world. If anything, it gives us Singaporeans the incentive to do a walkabout and admire our beautiful skyline…at night.
