I’m writing this after having been to our 3rd Disney on Ice. Before you say, ‘Yeah, so what’s the great deal?’ Well, first you have to know that I’m a serious movie and musical buff – I love movies and musicals that have a certain ‘cerebral edge’ – those with allegories, conspiracies and metaphors. So for me to, willingly, go to my 3rd Disney on Ice…is no mean feat.

Why did I do so?

Because these shows where fairy tales come to life transport us all to a magical world where dreams come true; where love never fails and where good ultimately triumphs over evil…fantasy elements which restore some hope and idealism in our lives amidst the assaults of conflicts, bad news, tragedies and politics that we get embroiled in one way or another.

My daughter is only a child once…once in her life. With each passing day, she grows older and closer to the real world where she will need to learn how to navigate the harsh realities of life…This short childhood of hers is fleeting, and I want to make it count.

So the wife and I willingly complied and for this occasion, she was dolled up as Princess Elsa (from Disney’s Frozen). Along with her cousin Caleb and best neighbour friend Maegan (who dressed as the pretty Princess Jasmine), we held hands as one big family, went to catch Disney on Ice: Treasure Trove on its opening night.

If we had to narrow down to just 3 memorable segments from the 2 hour extravaganza, our favourites would be:

Lion King

The Wilder beast stampede in The Lion King was visually stunning. The thunderous music coupled with the lavish props and beautiful moving scenery captivated the all of us. Added to that was the faultless couple-skate manuvures from Simba and Nala – their gorgeous lifts, spins, and showmanship enthralled even the adults in the audience.

Rapunzel

As a tribute to ‘Tangled’ being Disney’s 50th animated feature film, the scene where Rapunzel and Flynn Rider release of the sky lanterns was included with audience participation. The graceful choreography and award-winning soundtracks give the evening its enchanted mood.

Aladdin

The magical carpet ride which Prince Ali and Jasmine went on never fail to capture kids’ imagination. Added to that was an awesome surprise when an adorable life-sized elephant skates onto stage!

The Magic of Disney: where elephant walks on Ice!

After the show ended with a grand pyrotechnic display, our Princess gaily walked down the steps of the Indoor Stadium, humming Disney tunes. Our family held hands, skipped a little and for a moment, I completely forgot I would have to slowly inch my way out of the snaking car park queue later.

… oh well…there will always be queues…but she would only be a child, once.
