While we are all very familiar with Disney animations and musicals (and definitely not unfamiliar with Disneylands), we were not quite sure what to expect from this orchestral concert apart from knowing that it would be live singing and live orchestra on stage. As it turns out, this is one superb concert, one that every child or every child at heart should not miss.

Conducted by illustrious Disney composer and conductor, Brad Kelly and boasting a New York cast of 8 veteran Disney singers, it totally exceeded our expectations.

"DisneyonclassicAsiaPremiere"

For one, the quality of the singers’ voices were pure Disney magic – I never thought I would hear Snow White’s famed ‘Someday My Prince Will Come’ sung live, just like the original! Every tone and timbre of performance was matched to Disney’s original, even Sebastian the Lobster’s role in the Little Mermaid. The singers not only sang, they danced, pranced and acted their characters’ role on stage, giving life to these classic tunes, right in front of our eyes. On this note, the 3 male singers were hilarious and very talented.

To make the concert more engaging for audience, selected highlights from each animation movie were shown on the big screen to accompany the medleys. These were immaculately synchronized with the orchestra’s dynamics, phrasing and syncopation. It was truly magical to revisit excerpts our favourite Disney animation films accompanied live on stage by the mesmerizing music. The experience was nothing short of awesome! No wonder Disney on Classic had a 12-year sell out run in Japan!

We are all familiar with Disney’s quality of its productions but seldom do we get to see it hear it live (not counting Disney on ice). This is pure Disney performance first time ever in Singapore and South East Asia and we were truly enthralled.

The Metropolitan Festival Orchestra (MFO) were joined by seasoned orchestra players from Japan including its concert master. Together with conductor Brad Kelly, they brought the magic of Disney to live – from the smooth melodic ballads of Snow White and Cinderella to the intense rhythms of the Pirates of the Caribbean manifesting the bravado of Jack Sparrow. Maestro Kelly, through the MFO and the cast brought Disney to the Singaporean audience here at the Star Performing Arts Center which, by the way, had stunning lighting and sound system to accentuate the performance. To add to the realism of the evening, the 1st half ended with a surprise ‘cannon shot’ which rained on the audience.

The 2nd half of the performance featured more contemporary Disney classics from The Little Mermaid, Tangled and Frozen. The audience, young and old alike, unable to resist it any further sang along…though we capped it to an acceptable decibel as we still wanted to enjoy the vocal prowess of these very talented, experienced Disney vocalists.

Tonight’s performance not only brought to life before our very eyes the magic of Disney but more importantly, as Maestro Kelly mentioned, the concert reminded us about the purity of universal values embodied by Disney such as hope, love and dreams. It was also eye-opening for the young kids in the audience to see and hear their favourite Disney tunes being ‘made’ with many different instruments like the piano, the percussion, the strings etc. of an orchestra accompanied by the harp (beautiful!) and the crystal clear Disney voices. Disney on Classic was nothing short of magical and left us wanting more even after encore.

Here in Singapore for only two nights before it continues its Asia tour. If you have time tonight, don’t miss it!
