Having completed one semester of Primary One, I realised that e-learning at home has become part and parcel of a Singaporean student’s life. Our daughter does not get access to the electronic devices regularly so she looks forward to the weekly e-learning exercises (for each of the subjects English, Mathematics and Mandarin) where she gets an hour of screen time with our MacBook. Most, if not all of these exercises contain instructions or activities which require sound output. To ensure she can concentrate on the tasks (while the family life goes on functioning as normal), a child headphone become an almost necessary accessory.

Deciding upon a pair of headphones for a child is as much about the cost, durability, and comfort as it is knowing how the headphones will impact the child’s hearing. Here are some of the factors parents should take into consideration:

Things to Consider When Looking for Kids’ Headphones

Volume Limits: Most children like their sounds loud and exciting. Their hearing may be damaged if we allow them free reign to adjust the volume control. So one of the most important criteria in a child headphone is the volume control limit to prevent damage to the ear, even when the sound is turned up to it’s highest levels.

Noise Reduction: It can be distracting when people are talking or siblings making noise while you are trying to complete an e-learning exercise or listening to an audio story. Noise reduction features in a headphone keeps outside noise from interfering with the headset’s sound, eliminating the need to turn the volume up to dangerous levels. It also keeps the sounds from the headphones from leaking out and disturbing people around the listener.

Comfortable Fit: Children’s heads and ears are smaller than ours so the children set should be smaller, with an adjustable band and padded cups that fit snugly on the ears without slipping.

This is a common problem we experience with the plasticky child headphones given out on board an aircraft – it tends to be too big and slip off easily. We loaned a headphone from our neighbour for our NYC Summer vacation last year and Dana was so pleased it fit perfectly. Since then, she has been bugging us to get her a set.

Kid Friendly Design: The headphones should be durable, colorful and stylish. Something they would be happy to be seen with.

Cost-Efficient: Because a parent’s disposable income is limited, the children headphones (which is an accessory), should not be overly costly. For us, it doesn’t make economical sense to spend $200+ on a child headphone because they tend to outgrow (and misplace) their belongings fast.

We were delighted when a local homegrown toy website, Wonder Toys sent over a set of the Lil Gadget Connect+ Volume Limited Wired Kids Headphones (recommended for children 2-8 years) for us to review, just in time for our upcoming holiday. A check on Amazon revealed very favourable reviews from customers. Among its kid-friendly features, two of them stand out:

"LilGadgets

1. Its brand new SharePort feature which sets them apart from other wired headphones available on the market. With a 3.5mm port on each ear, the child can use one port to plug into their device and the other to share their sound (with a parent, a sibling or friend)! Simply connect their own headphones into the port on the other side to immediately start listening in. No need to purchase or carry an extra splitter!

2. It limits the maximum volume a child can adjust (max 90db) and works well with the volume limit control on iPod, iPad and iPhone (Go to Settings > Music > Volume Limit). Hence, we can let our kids use the headphones with ease of mind. Even without setting any volume limits on our devices, the headphones produced approximately 20% less volume than regular headphones.
