We all know that space is a premium in this tiny island of Singapore. That’s why Singaporeans are one of the world’s most well-travelled lot. We we go on holidays to look for places with space to breathe, unwind and be liberated from the daily cares that suffocate us. Be it beach hopping, shopping, reading a book, enjoying a walk or just lazing around in the hotel…Space is a luxury that we seek when on holiday.

Actually, long before the term ‘staycation’ was coined, one of the household names for a 5-star hotel experience was the Pan Pacific Hotel. In a recent stay, we were privileged to discover that while times have changed for many things, the choice for a quality getaway hotel still remains the iconic Pan Pacific. Why?

The Pan Pacific Hotel had completed its massive renovation in 2012. Expected with any renovation of that magnitude would be some interior redesigning, addition of new furnishings etc. While we were glad that the makeovers gave an updated appeal to the hotel, certain aspects remain untouched…much to the guests’ benefit.

Being the tallest hotel in the Marina area, one would be awed by the iconic atrium that stretches all the way to level 35 of the 38-storey hotel. The modernistic architecture of the atrium gives a sense of space (there’s that word!) with lines converging into infinity (instead of a ceiling). Within the lobby sits the longest bar counter in Singapore, accompanied by cabanas lined with thick cushions. These cabanas partially sit within a large water feature pond with a bridge that traverses across it. In short, stepping into the lobby made us feel like we’ve stepped into a completely different world – from the busy and bustling world outside into a forested opening where trees stretch endlessly skywards; where we can lounge and relax beneath their shaded canopies while letting the trickling sounds of a brook nearby soothe us into the luxurious, serene and spacious world of the Pan Pacific Singapore.

The check-in was friendly and swift. We were ushered into one of its iconic bubble lifts taking us up to our room on the 28th floor. The bubble lifts facing the hotel’s exteriors offer guests the breath-taking view of Marina skyline as it glides effortlessly up. The same staff who checked us in, brought us personally to our room and explained to us the many amenities we can enjoy. She did it with such warmth and spoke so confidently we thought she was a supervisor or but no, Charlene was just an intern! Wow! The hotel has trained their staff well, a testament of its consistent service which we were to experience from all other staff during our stay.

Remember we spoke about space? The moment the room door opened, we were pleasantly surprised by how spacious the room is. Despite putting in an extra single bed and a cot for the kids, the room that comes with an existing king-sized bed and a generous bar counter still had ample space for a large desk and space for us to move freely. Adding to this is the view from the large window overlooking the Marina bay area. What a sight! We could just sit here and admire the cityscape all day!

The furnishings of the room are chic and modern. The makeover has not left even a trace of the hotel’s age. The carpeting feels plush while the bedding thick and luxurious. The bathroom is clean with modern amenities affording even a full sized bathtub (a big plus for families with young kids!) and a window that looks into the main room, aligned with the magnificent bay view. Again, the sense of space is accentuated – a luxury that not many hotels offers its guests.

With the children looked after, we were able to slip away for some couple time at the Club Lounge situated on the 38th floor (highest) of the hotel. The Club Lounge offers a stunning 360- panoramic and breath-taking view of downtown Singapore and the Marina area. On a clear day, the view stretches on forever and check this out, the lounge is opened 24 hours! So, anytime you need some personal space to relax, reflect or just chill, the lounge is at your service. It offers an exquisite selection of fresh and delectable food at different times of the day. In the morning, it offers a small selection of the main breakfast buffet spread. High tea is served from 3 to 5pm and evening cocktails from 6pm-8pm. While we were there, we overheard some enthusiastic guests commenting about how glad they are to be back and, in particular, to taste the fine food again. Another draw of the lounge is the eclectic and elegant range of furniture. We love the unique table lamps there. The main draw to the lounge, for me, would be the quality of service. Guests are addressed by name and the staff are attentive, yet not intrusive. We were thoroughly well taken care of each time we visit the Club Lounge!

In the evening, to walk off those calories, we headed out to the shops. Next to the hotel is Marina Square and not too far are Millennia Walk and Suntec City which offer a host of shopping and entertainment options. Talk about convenience, right at your door step!

The main buffet breakfast is served at the Edge Restaurant. The Edge restaurant looks deceptively small from the exterior but walk into it, you would be taken aback by how wide and spacious the whole place is! I dare say it may be among the few largest hotel buffet venues we’ve been. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised that at virtually every corner of the restaurant has a food station, each serving diverse and delicious range of cuisines. From Japanese Udon to Korean condiments, from local delicacies to cold cut meats and cheeses, we were spoilt for choice because choice was available at every turn!

Right after breakfast, the daughter was clamouring for some swimming so off we went to experience one of the largest pools in any city hotels here. The large semi-circled palm-shaped pool is large enough for families to have their own space at the pool. We were able to swim and waddle around the pool with 2 other families a short distance away. Another thing we liked about the pool is that it has a single depth, which means we can swim with the kids with peace of mind and not to be too concerned about sudden depth drop.

If swimming is not your thing, then you can either lounge at the spacious poolside and catch up with some reading or some tanning. The gym is also nearby, large and spacious it offers the complete range of exercise and toning facilities.

For lunch, we decided to order in-room dining as Buddy had fallen asleep after the swim. The food prepared by the resident chefs arrived fresh and warm, well within the hour. The trolley came with a warmer tucked discreetly underneath the trolley. The satay we ordered was very succulent, not over grilled and a satay sauce which was yummy. The Char Koay Teow was flavourful, not too oily nor salty. We were impressed.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Pan Pacific Singapore – it offer a luxurious experience along with a view that takes our breath away and it offers so much space for families to enjoy bonding time while still retaining personal space to relax, refresh and to reconnect. Now that’s what a staycation is for! We can’t wait to be back!
