Hello May, you crept upon us serendipitously…I have barely recovered from the hectic April (the month of the Princess’s Birthday celebration) and now you’re here. There is a major deadline due at work next week and many blog commitments to fulfill but we decided just for today, we would take it easy and enjoy a simple meal to celebrate your arrival, just us 3.

Daddy and Dana wanted to head out for a trial run to practise for the upcoming Cold Storage Kids’ Run and I was craving for the unforgettable Churros we tasted at GRUB so no prize for guessing where we ended up.

A beeline had formed even before the restaurant opened its doors at 5.30pm. Many families, like us, like the ‘dine in the park’ concept, its casual modern industrial-feel interiors and breezy alfresco seating. I also like the fact that they use only ‘responsible ingredients‘ (free range grass fed beef, non-antibiotic chicken etc.)

Food wise, the standards had slipped a little since it’s opening a year ago. Our appetizer of chili con carne (S$8) was delicious and saved the day. Our mains of slow-cooked pork belly (S$16) and grilled steak with fries (S$19) were pale shadows of its former glory. I remembered the pork belly used to taste more tender and succulent. Today’s version was too dry and tough for my liking. We also returned the fries that came with the grilled steak as it was cold and over-fried. What was most disappointing was the churros (S$9) which we specially came for. They were a far cry from the ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ ones which used to be sprinkled generously with cinnamon sugar. We joked that perhaps the Master Chef is away on leave since it’s Labor Day after all!

Best part of today’s meal – gourmet Thatchers’ Pear Cider (S$13) and the corn chips (S$8)

Slow-cooked pork belly (S$16) that’s over-roasted

Grilled Steak with Fries (S$19) – unflattering presentation but it tastes so good

What we came here for – the Churros (S$9). They used to taste heavenly…I wonder what happened.

Always cracks me up to dine with these two…

We made use of the long hour wait for the food to indulge in simple conversations at the table. Daddy and Dana were up to their antics and decided to celebrate an early Mothers’ Day for me at the restaurant with an ice-cream cake from Swensens.

A kiss that says, ‘I Love You Mommy!’

The deep alluring red Swensen’s Velvety Mom-ents cake was a head-turner which instantly drew favorable responses from fellow diners near us. We overheard them commenting, ‘woah so nice!’ I didn’t know vanilla ice-cream can go so well with Red Velvet Cake. Moist, fluffy and sweet – Moms with sweet tooth will like it.

For those who are looking for a cake for Mothers’ Day, the Swensen’s Velvety Mom-ents is priced at an affordable S$49 (excluding GST). You can buy one off the shelf at any Swensen’s and Earle Swensen’s outlets without any advanced ordering (while stocks last).

After our dinner, we took a relaxed stroll under the starlight through the scenic park, enjoying the evening breeze before heading home. It was a good early Mothers’ Day meal despite some misses. Do note that GRUB does not take any reservations so be prepared to wait for a table or come early on the dot when it opens. Coincidentally, today is Grub’s 1st anniversary and they will be open for lunch starting tomorrow, 2 May 2014 (11am to 3pm; Tuesday to Fridays). Check out their website or facebook page for more details.
