Simply Phantastic Pho!

Our family are big noodle fans and we used to travel to the seedier part of Joo Chiat for our Beef Pho fix. Not anymore. Since Mrs Pho opened its doors at Beach Road last month, we have visited twice on our own and even threw a birthday celebration in Vietnam. That speaks volume of how much we love this little Vietnamese joint, does it?

The Ambience and Decor

Modelled after the Vietnamese back street alleys, Mrs Pho has recreated the side streets of Hanoi with stenciled phone numbers covering the wall. Apparently, this is how the city’s craftsmen advertise their services over there. The green metal gates were specially shipped in from Vietnam and left to rust to give that grungy old-world feel. Rustic light-bulbs from suspended cables and the chatter of the Vietnamese staff make your dining experience even more authentic. We feel as if we were dining right on the sidewalks of Vietnam (sans bicycles).

The Food

The food is out-of-this-world yummy. We came for the Beef Pho which totally stole the show. The broth is delicate and sweet, the beef balls (freshly shipped from Vietnam weekly), beef brisket and beef slices tender, fresh and not at all gamey. Servings are generous too. Every bowl of Pho comes with an accompanying small bowl of a semi-raw egg floating in broth. Very unique! The kids love their soupy Chicken Pho and slurped every spoonful of it. Besides Phos, other ‘Must-Try’ dishes on the menu are the spring rolls (both the fresh and the fried versions), the grilled meat balls and the Chicken Wings. We also like their homemade yoghurt drink, avocado smoothie and Saigon salty lemonade. We’re happy that at Mrs Pho, we need not pay exorbitant prices for good food because it means we can return again and again for our Pho fix!

We enjoyed the food so much on our 1st visit that I put together a surprise birthday celebration for Daddy last Saturday with a group of about 20 friends. We ate, drank, chatted, laughed and ate some more. At the end of the party, everybody left for home, full of praises for Mrs Pho! Needless to say, we were pleased to see Mrs Pho featured in this week’s issue of 8 Days Magazines. Its good reputation certainly precedes itself.
