When Dana was an infant, one of the things I found surprisingly useful was, surprisingly, wasn’t the stroller or baby cot but a night light.

Like most first time parents, armed with checklist of baby items, we shopped every weekend to prepare for the arrival of the newborn. Stroller, cot, sheets, mobile, diaper station, baby carrier and the list go on. One item which wasn’t quite on the list which we discovered by chance to be ever so useful in darker moments (both literally and metaphorically) was the simple tap light – those dome-shaped lights which turns on and off when tapped. They are relatively inexpensive and can be bought from Daiso or the neighborhood hardware shops. The lights are particularly useful for the night feeds or to soothe the baby and check on her when she was ill. Turning on the room light in the middle of the night was a faux pas to most parents who treasured their precious sleep.

However, useful as they are, these cheap tap lights pose a lot of problems:

1. The small conventional light bulbs would be hot after being turned on for a while
2. The batteries drain easily and the last thing you want to do while tending to your sick child at night is to be fumbling for fresh batteries
3. The cheap spring mechanism spoils easily, especially after being accidentally dropped
4. The conventional spring mechanism produces a loud ( ‘tik-tak’) sound when turned on in the dead of night, disturbing the tranquility.

Which is why when the new Philips and Disney Imaginative Lighting range was launched last month, it was such a happy ‘light-bulb’ moment for us’! Apart from our own experience, we were told that in a recent survey conducted by Philips with 350 Singapore families, 43.5% of parents said their little ones wake up on average of once or twice a night and close to 70% of children do not sleep on their own. These compact, portable lighting from Philips and Disney will capture any child’s imagination with huggable SoftPals, fun projector lights, adorable night lights and handy torch lights! Besides, being great companions and bedtime buddies, and I dare say these would be ‘life-savers’ for the parents who are training their children to sleep alone at night. The child-friendly, robust and energy-efficient features make them perfect bedtime buddies, your kids will look forward to having these friends lull them to sleep in their warm glow.

Parents would be pleased to know that this new range of Philips and Disney Imaginative Lighting range is powered by LED bulbs which are far more efficient, long lasting and doesn’t emit as much heat as conventional bulbs. In keeping with high safety standards, each light is also designed to ensure there are no small parts or sharp edges; even cables can be tidied away using velcro cable binders to keep little fingers safe. Best of all, the attractive Disney designs would sit well with any child’s room decor and enhance the fun quotient!

One thing worth mentioning is also that SoftPals are charged using the latest Contact Charging Technology – it charges by sitting on a disc shaped charger, reducing any risk from wire connections, prods etc. The SoftPals also turn on and off just by tilting – tilt once it turns on, tilt again and it turns off – quiet, fast, perfect for those night wakes or toilet trips when soft illumination is needed.

Ever since we welcomed Sulley SoftPal home, Dana has been going to bed willingly and taking a much shorter time to fall asleep. We all know a good nights’ sleep does wonders for the soul so we predict these lights would make excellent baby shower, birthday, full month and Christmas gifts. I know we would be happy to receive some Disney magic, wouldn’t you?
