Heart-pounding adventures meet heartwarming moments in this tranquil lakeside town, Taupo.

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, Taupo was our family’s designated adventure stop — a place where thrill-seekers chase waterfalls, defy gravity, and touch the sky. While David took the plunge with a tandem skydive, the rest of us discovered that Taupo has so much more than just adrenaline to offer.
Framed by the calm beauty of Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, this charming town is also a haven for rest, connection, and meaningful family experiences. Whether you’re travelling with little ones or teens, Taupo is the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and savour life’s little moments.
In our previous blog post, we shared two adrenaline-pumping adventures we loved in Taupo — the AJ Hackett Bungy and the thrilling Huka Falls Jet ride. In this article, we’re shifting gears to highlight four family-friendly experiences that are perfect for all ages — from energetic little ones to young-at-heart grandparents.
1. Cruise with Chris Jolly Outdoors – A Lake Taupo Must-Do

After a day of jet boats and daredevil jumps, this 90-minute lake cruise was exactly what our family needed. Hosted by Chris Jolly Outdoors, the cruise offered a relaxing journey across the lake with free-flow hot drinks, a cozy indoor lounge, and an outer deck to take in sweeping views of the water and surrounding peaks.
Our friendly skipper shared stories of Taupo’s rich Māori heritage and pointed out natural landmarks along the way. The highlight? Seeing the Ngātoroirangi Māori Rock Carvings up close — ancient, cultural artwork only visible from the water. Admiring it as we listened to the stories was humbling and beautiful.

2. The ‘Coolest McDonald’s in the World’

It’s a real thing! Right in the middle of Taupo sits a life-sized DC3 airplane — and inside? A fully functioning McDonald’s. Quirky, retro, and one of those “only in New Zealand” surprises that absolutely delighted the kids (and us adults too). Nort an elaborate tourist attraction, just a quirky pitstop for a quick meal and photo op.

3. Sunset at the #LoveTaupo Sign – A Simple, Special Moment

Just a few minutes’ walk from the Mcdonalds, we located one of Taupo’s most iconic photo spots: the #LoveTaupo sign, overlooking the Taupo lake.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky with soft oranges and golds, we were in awe of its beauty. It was here that we captured one of our favourite family photos — just us, the lake, and the kind of tranquility that makes you stop and take in the moment of NZ’s magnificient scenery.

4. A Heartwarming Encounter at Timberline Racing Huskies

While Daddy was soaring above Lake Taupo on his skydive adventure, the kids and I ventured off for a surprise visit for the kids to visit Timberline Racing Siberian Huskies!
Since I do not drive, I contacted the lovely owners, Steve and Taniya in advance to pick us up from our Taupo Airbnb. For a small fee, transport was arranged to bring us to their cosy, husky farm on the outskirts of Taupo (about 35mins drive). From the moment we arrived, their warmth and hospitality made us feel like extended family.
We spent two unforgettable hours learning about the history and heart behind this dedicated sled dog operation. The kids were absolutely captivated by the live demonstration, where a team of eight huskies pulled a quad bike across the track with sheer adrenalin and energy. We had the chance to meet and cuddle the dogs, ask questions over hot choc and cookies, and snap lots of photos and videos with our new four-legged friends. Dana and Buddy almost didn’t want to leave!
The experience was not just interactive — it was incredibly warm and personal. Steve and Taniya’s deep love for their huskies was evident. After the tour, they dropped us back at our Airbnb where we reunited with Daddy (still riding the high of his skydive) and we walked into Taupo Centre for a casual dinner where the kids couldn’t stop talking about their encounters with the Huskies.
You can find more about the tour we booked here: Timberline Racing Huskies – Tours. We highly recommend it!

Taupo may be a small town on the NZ map, but it made a huge impact on our hearts. Whether you’re jumping out of a plane, cruising on a lake, cuddling huskies, or chasing sunsets with your family, you’ll leave with more than just great photos — you’ll leave with memories that feel like magic.
