Day 6: Donkubune Canal Ride (Yanazawa), Tenmangu Shrine, Itoshima.
Day 6 took us through the picturesque rural landscapes of Kyushu, beginning with a straightforward 1.5-hour drive from Kumamoto to Yanagawa 柳川(岡山県). Our first stop was the charming town of Yanagawa, where we enjoyed the Donkubune Canal Ride —an experience we prebooked through a local website. Drifting down the tranquil canals lined with traditional Japanese homes, our boatman entertained us with local music and shared intriguing historical insights, even though it was all in Japanese. Despite the language barrier, it was a peaceful journey that offered a glimpse into local life and culture. For non-Japanese speakers, a bit of background on local history beforehand can enhance the experience.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine 太宰府天満宮: At Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, our first shrine visit of the day, we were greeted by its serene beauty amidst bustling crowds. The shrine is renowned for its striking main hall, featuring a gracefully curved roof adorned with intricate carvings depicting local flora and fauna. Passing through the towering vermilion torii gates, we entered an atmosphere steeped in reverence and history. Pathways to various prayer halls and garden spaces were shaded by centuries-old trees, creating a tranquil contrast to the lively energy of visitors and worshippers. It was a captivating introduction to the spiritual and architectural richness of Japanese shrines.
Lunch at Tachibana Udon
Lunch at Tachibana Udon in Yanagawa was a delightful culinary experience. Known for its authentic udon noodles crafted with meticulous care, the restaurant offered a cozy dining atmosphere with low tables and tatami mats, accompanied by prompt, friendly service. We enjoyed bowls of piping hot udon, each strand perfectly chewy and paired with a savory broth that was rich yet light. The menu featured a variety of toppings, from tender slices of pork belly to crisp tempura, enhancing the flavors and textures of the meal. The setting allowed us to relax and appreciate the simplicity and warmth of traditional Japanese cuisine, making Tachibana Udon an ideal spot for lunch after our canal ride experience.

Day 7: Itoshima, Fukuoka.
Today marks the final stretch of our journey as we drive from Itoshima to Fukuoka, a straightforward route that allows for some last-minute exploration before concluding our trip.
In Itoshima, we started early to capture some great shots at the White Tori Gate, Couple’s Rocks [夫婦岩桜井二見ヶ浦], and the Palm Tree Swing [椰子樹遷揪], popular spots where arriving early helped us avoid crowds, despite limited and pricey parking.
For lunch, we indulged in the famous Ichiran Ramen [一蘭の森 糸島店], originating in Fukuoka, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. We also enjoyed a idyllic stop at the London Bus Cafe with their delightful gelato offerings. Both places are highly recommended for their distinct flavors and ambience.
On our way to Fukuoka, we made a stop at Shiraito Falls [白糸の滝], a small waterfall nestled amidst steep hills and winding roads. Pity it was raining when we arrive so we didn’t linger long.
Arriving in Fukuoka in the evening, we returned our rental car and strolled to Canal City Hakata, a big shopping mall for dinner and souvenir shopping to commemorate our journey.
Travel Tip: Note that petrol stations often close on Sundays in Japan, so plan your routes accordingly to ensure you can refuel before returning your rental car.
As we wrapped up Day 6 of our 8D7N Kyushu self-drive trip, we were enchanted by the unique experiences Yanagawa and Itoshima offered. Itoshima, in particular, captivated us with its relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. The coastal town’s scenic spots and charming cafes provided the perfect setting to unwind and relax.
