Most Singaporeans love Japan and we are no different. After travelling twice to Japan with the kids, we have grown to love the country, her people and the culture. In fact, we get never get enough of it and are returning this December! However loving and appreciating the Japanese culture goes beyond just Sashimi, Sushi and Hello Kitty. This week, there is a wonderful opportunity for Singapore families to discover part of the finer aspects of Japanese culture.
Sunstar to promote cultural exchange between Singapore and Japan
A series of Japanese Calligraphy Art Exhibition and fringe cultural events is taking place from now to October 25, 2017. Hosted by Japan Calligraphy Art Academy, co-organized by Sunstar and Japan Creative Centre (Embassy of Japan) and supported by The Mainichi Shimbun / Mainichi Shodo Kai, the events promote cultural exchange between Japan and Singapore as well as use Japanese calligraphy as a channel to direct local communities’ attention to the importance of holistic healthcare.
Japanese Calligraphy Art Exhibition
The Calligraphy Art Exhibition is currently held at the Luxe Art Museum (6, Handy Road, Singapore) from now till 25 October, 2017. On display are 60 pieces of curated masterpieces by member calligraphers of Japan Calligraphy Art Academy, across four categories: Sino-Japanese ideograms (“kanji”), Japanese syllabary (“kana”), new calligraphic art and seal carving. Visitors can watch invigorating calligraphy performances at 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. daily (except for October 25, 2017).
Visitors will also receive an exclusive calligraphy art gift and a lovely Sunstar goodie bag while stocks last. Admission to the exhibition and performances are free for the public, the gallery is open from 20 Oct – 25 Oct 2017, 10am – 6pm daily.
Japan Cultural Workshop Day
Apart from the Calligraphy Art Exhibition, Sunstar has co-organized a series of cultural workshops to bring Japanese culture to the heartlands. We visited the ones held at Choa Chu Kang CC yesterday and experienced the following:

3. ‘Kids Dental Show’ to raise awareness about the importance of oral care among children. We didn’t realise that the dental clinic inside Kidzania Singapore was sponsored by Sunstar group! As the name implies, Sunstar reminded kids to brush their teeth at least twice a day: when they see the Sun in the morning and when they see the Stars at night.
The Japanese costumes and instant photo-booth were a hit with many residents. Many of them stayed on to enjoy a Japanese bento dinner followed by a Japanese anime movie screening.
